Born in an Austin kitchen after an unexpected layoff, Kuhdoo grew from farmers market tents into America’s largest heirloom soap maker. Discover how determination, honest ingredients, and uncompromising craftsmanship transformed one mother’s leap of faith into a woman-owned, veteran-owned Texas brand found in more than 1,000 stores nationwide.
From Llano, Texas to Your Shower: Our Story
Some brands are built in boardrooms. Kuhdoo was built in a kitchen, under farmers market tents, with a baby on the way and a whole lot of determination.
This is that story.
It Started With a Layoff and a Leap of Faith
In 2013, Kaysha Kosman was seven months pregnant when she was unexpectedly laid off from her corporate job. For most people, that combination - no job, a baby coming, bills due - would have been a moment to play it safe.
Kaysha did the opposite.
Earlier that year she had learned the art of soap making from a third-generation Texas soap maker. She fell in love with the process immediately - creating something real, something useful, something made entirely from ingredients provided by nature. When corporate America shut one door, she walked through a different one entirely.
She started pouring soap in her kitchen. And she decided to make a real go of it.
The Name Nobody Forgets
Kuhdoo - pronounced "Kuh-DOO" - did not come from a branding agency or a focus group. It came from a moment of pure Kaysha.
After bumping her knee one day she playfully said "Oh, my kuh-knee!" That turned into "I kuh-love you," "kuh-damn it," kuh -his and kuh-that. When it came time to name the company the answer was obvious. Let's Kuhdoo it.
The name stuck because it captured something real - a make-lemonade-from-lemons mentality, a knuckle down and get it done spirit that would define everything Kuhdoo became. It is not just a brand name. It is a way of operating.
Built Under Tents, One Bar at a Time
The early days of Kuhdoo were not glamorous. There was no launch event, no investor funding, no national distribution deal waiting at the finish line.
There were farmers markets. Early mornings and long weekends under pop-up tents on the streets of Austin. Conversations with customers one at a time. Bars poured by hand, packed by hand, and sold with genuine pride in the product.
That grassroots foundation built something more valuable than any marketing budget could buy - a loyal customer base that came back not because of an ad they saw, but because the soap actually worked. If you want to understand what makes the formula so different, read about why Kuhdoo only uses pronounceable ingredients.
From a Kitchen to 1,000 Retailers Nationwide
What started on a stovetop in a home kitchen grew into something Kaysha describes as bigger and more amazing than she ever imagined.
Today Kuhdoo is the largest heirloom soap manufacturer in the United States, with over 1,000 retail locations nationwide. You can find Kuhdoo bars at every H-E-B across Texas, Buc-ee's locations nationwide, to name a few.
The brand now operates out of a brick-and-mortar storefront in Llano, Texas - a small Hill Country town that has become the heart of everything Kuhdoo makes. Every bar is still poured by hand in small batches. The scale has changed. The standards have not. The Team Behind the Bar
Kuhdoo today is led by two people with very different but deeply complementary skill sets.
Kaysha Kosman - founder, product formulator, and the soul of the brand. She oversees every formulation decision and quality standard. Her connection to Kuhdoo is deeply personal - she has said herself that she does not always know where Kuhdoo ends and where she begins, because the values of the brand are her own values. Integrity, transparency, accountability. What you put out into the world comes back to you.
Jake Thomas - Co-Owner and COO, a former United States Marine with degrees from FIT, USC's Marshall School of Business, and UT Austin. Jake leads operations, brand direction, and long-term strategy. He brings military discipline and systems thinking to a brand that was built on grit - making sure that as Kuhdoo grows, it never drifts from what made it worth growing in the first place.
Together they run a company that is proudly woman-owned, veteran-owned, and made in Texas.
What Has Never Changed
Thirteen years in, a lot has changed about Kuhdoo. The kitchen is gone. The pop-up tent has been retired. The reach is national.
But the things that matter have stayed exactly the same.
Every bar is still handcrafted in small batches. Every ingredient is still one you can read, say out loud, and understand. The tallow soap collection and goat's milk bars are made with the same care and formula standards as the very first bars poured in that Austin kitchen.
The soap is still made by people who genuinely care what goes into it - because they put their name on every bar.
The Kuhdoo Mentality
Kaysha built this company while raising young children, working markets alone, packing orders late into the night, and navigating every challenge that comes with building something from nothing. The spirit behind the brand - knuckle down, buckle down, and Kuhdoo it - is not just a tagline. It is a lived experience.
When life throws something hard at you, you do not wait for the conditions to be perfect. You make the best thing you possibly can with what you have in front of you, and you do not cut corners doing it.
That mentality is baked into every bar Kuhdoo makes. Whether it is a botanical bar, a beer-infused bar made with local Austin breweries, or a seasonal drop that sells out every year - the standard never changes. And your shower gets the benefit of it every single morning.
